Musically, from a wild and unapologetic indie and rooted bedroom pop-rock spirit (spoiler warning from now on), Freequency (I'm Here Now) brings firstly a different branch of Southern rock than the one we saw in Feeling Place (released on march); this time with a deeper blues flavour, a captivating give-and-take of claw and mellowness and also feauturing an effective kind of disco-funky-mantric and minimalistic rythym base, while showing an increasing presence of psychedelic and avant-garde rock as the song progresses, to culminate in a thrilling final minute where the sounds, like a devotional chant, envolve us into a sort of chamanic, cosmic and mystical experience. That could be astonishing and memorable end of party for some, indeed.
For this song Alan James has entered in the “Looping Crew” mode again (like in Feeling place), focusing in vocals and production (although recording some percussion too), so counting on fine and selected instrumental tracks from talented session musicians, to gather the segments of those tracks, molding, connecting and personally editing them to make the song the way Alan wants it to sound, taking Beev Rations music a step beyond.
And the lyrics of Freequency are -never better said- up to speed with this current phase in Alan James' art, because this tune is about self-empowerment, assertiveness, awareness and, first of all, the natural hability we all have of feeling ourselves inwardly, simply to know where we stand and what we really want to be or do at any given moment. All of this, of course, respecting the others as much as oneself, beyond someone elses expectations or the guidelines or directives that social controllers may be spreading through mass media propaganda. Just look at the very significant scene, in the song's official video, when Alan James read the newspaper...
It is no coincidence that Alan gives us away the aquamarine green of his eyes in this video, for the first time looking directly into our eyes without glasses (or hats) of any kind, in certain moments of the INTERIOR scenes. So, if in “My Vow” (released in may) the accent was put in acepting the current circumstances proactively, being one self and feeling good no matter what, now the nuance lies in being also aware of our capacity to bang the table and decide to change our direction in whatever way we feel best to us, just because we want to!
In the end, it's when you connect fully with yourself (even for seconds) that you can discover your intimate connection with all life in cosmos, as we can feel in the final row of this FREEquency.
